There are lots of weird bumps and noises here. It's often a coconut falling off a tree next door, the chimes going in the breeze, the fishermen doing something inexplicable. But it's only scary at night. When you can hear things going across the roof. They are birds or water monitors or... well, actually I don't know yet. Which is why I was awake at 430 this morning and so saw the fishermen go off to work. I'll find out though and let you know. If you come to visit it will help. Although so will the arrack!
Update: Apparently it's usually those squirrel type things. I don't know their name yet.

I sympathise. We have everything but the fishermen. And the squirrel type thing is most likely the Palm Squirrel, Funambulus palmarum, which is Latin for "I like to have fun in the palm trees."
ReplyDeleteLOL. Love it.
DeleteJust found your blog and reading it with interest. My wife and I are thinking of moving to Negombo within the next three years using the Retirement Visa offer from the SL government. We are older parents and have a school age son. Have you heard anything about the NICE school located in Negombo or met any expats with children attending there ? You seem very happy being there. I haven't been in SL since 1979 but have very good memories of the place and it's people. We are Americans but I found my wife on one of my many travels in India. She is from the anglo-indian community and can speak tamil. I know that will come in useful in S.L.

Dear John,
Delete(and Dawn - I'm sorry to hijack your site temporarily!)
I know of the NICE school and in fact have plans to meet with the principal eventually to discuss ESL support (once we're more settled). Although we don't have a need to school any children, I spent a fair amount of time on the NICE site back in February and just had another look now. It seems pretty solid to me, but you will obviously want to check with parents who have direct experience. Have you tried the Google group for expats in Sri Lanka or the Internations Colombo group? I have links to both of them on The Lanka Log. There is also a small Facebook group of women in Negombo. I'm happy to point you in the direction. For Internations, you need an invitation to join, and I can do that easily if you haven't already gotten one. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Thanks so much for the comment. I think that LankaLogger (see comment above) who also writes a blog might be of more use to you at this stage I'm afraid although I will ask around. Hope you keep reading.
ReplyDeleteYep. Happy to help. That's why we're here. Thanks for the recommendation, Dawn.
